ITC'S UFO "STORY INFORMATION" BOOKLET Transcribed by Lisa Williams. Supplied by Bernice Russell. Introduction by Marc Martin. Near the time of UFO's original broadcast in 1970, distributor ITC created a booklet containing an episode guide for the series. I assume that this booklet was distributed to the press and/or television stations, but I really don't know what it was used for. This booklet is not very impressive looking, as it certainly was not intended to be a mass-market item. Although all I have is a photocopy, I can tell that it was comb-bound, and the front cover says "story information - U.F.O", and has a graphic showing four colored strips with holes in them, much like the skinny little strips of paper which came out of computers on sci-fi shows of the 60's and 70's. The 59 pages inside look like they were created on a regular typewriter using 1-1/2 line spacing. There are no photos at all, and the only other graphic is a small ITC logo which appears at the bottom corner of every page. For each episode, this booklet contains plot synopses and credits. The plot synopses have a one-line version followed by a detailed version which usually gives away how the episode ends. The credits consist of all of the credits shown at the beginning of the episode plus the "cast in the order of appearance" shown during the end credits. This booklet appears to be the source of the so-called "official ITC UFO episode order" used by the Gerry Anderson fan club FANDERSON and the episodes released onto home video in the UK. This is rather unfortunate, as this order really doesn't make much sense, and even the booklet's table of contents notes that the only recommendation about episode order is that IDENTIFIED and EXPOSED be shown first. This booklet was transcribed by Lisa Williams, based on a photocopy supplied by Bernice Russell. The photocopy was complete and 100% legible, so nothing is missing in this transcription. The layout here is exactly the same as the original. Factual errors, spelling errors and typos in the original were left uncorrected. Page breaks are marked here with a unique character string, so if you would like to print out a copy of this file and maintain the original page breaks, simply use a word processor which allows you to replace these strings with page breaks. Some words in the booklet are underlined, and they are marked here with underscores _around_ the words. Enjoy! "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_IDENTIFIED_" A grim secret is revealed when a visitor from Outer Space arrives on earth...... * * * For ten years, there have been confirmed incidents involv- ing Unidentified Flying Objects. Mutilated bodies have been found after attacks and people have disappeared completely - among them Leila Karlin, who has never been seen again since the arrival of a strange craft which has been one more piece of evidence to con- vince the world's governments that a force should be formed to fight the UFO menace. The missing girl's brother, Peter Karlin (PETER GORDENO), is now a member of that organisation, "SHADO" - Supreme Head- quarters, Alien Defence Organisation - of which Commander Edward Straker (ED BISHOP) is in control, with Colonel Alec Freeman (GEORGE SEWELL) as his right-hand man. SHADO has a base on the moon, a sophisticated tracking satellite and powerful Earth-based strike and search machinery. Now, at last, it seems that there is a breakthrough in the inter- ception of objects through the perfection of equipment by a design team headed by Virginia Lake (WANDA VENTHAM). Alec Freeman is sent to America to escort Virginia Lake and other members of the team, and SHADO's Moonbase Control, commanded by Lieut. Gay Ellis (GABRIELLE DRAKE), is put on the alert. A UFO is sighted and closes in on the transporter 'plane. Evasive action fails. But Peter Karlin, in the SHADO strike 'plane Sky One, intercepts. The UFO crashes, and a body is re- covered and rushed to hospital. But efforts to save the UFO pilot are in vain. Almost as soon as the alien's helmet is removed, the young-looking features are transformed into those of an incredibly aged man, and he dies. But in death, he gives up one of the secrets Commander Straker has been so anxious to learn; that many of the alien's organ are human. ***PAGE*** 2. A dying race, in desperate need of replacement organs from healthy people, the aliens have been finding their hopes of survival on Earth, millions of miles away, by raids in search of human organs to keep themselves alive. Grimly, Straker has to break the news to Peter Karlin that his sister is dead. For the alien's heart was a transplant. The donor..... Leila Karlin. ---------- ***PAGE*** 3. "U.F.O." "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_EXPOSED_" A civilian test pilot stumbles on a military secret - and finds that he has flown into a new career. * * * One vital aspect of SHADO's work is that the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects must be kept secret. Confirma- tion could result in mass hysteria and terror. And SHADO has come into being not only to protect Earth from danger from outer space but to protect the public from realising that such a danger exists. Drastic action has to be taken, therefore, when a civil- ian test pilot named Paul Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) sees a UFO and actually photographs it. But when the UFO is intercepted by SHADO craft, Foster's plane is also damaged and crashes. he succeeds in ejecting, however, though his co-pilot is killed. Convinced that he has proof of the UFO's existence, Foster makes efforts to find his camera, but a man named Jackson (VLADEK SHEYBAL) - who claims to be of Military Intelligence but is actually a member of SHADO - tries to persuade him that he was imagining things. The film has been recovered, but Foster is convinced that it has been doctored: there's no sign of the UFO on it. But Foster is not to be put off. With the help of Janna Wade (JEAN MARSH), sister of his dead co-pilot, he follows up one clue after another, and his suspicions are deepened when he discovers that ex-USAF Colonel Ed Straker (ED BISHOP) is now a film executive. It looks as if he is in real trouble when he learns that Straker is, in fact, the SHADO Commander and that he has stumbled into the realms of very tight security - but there are major surprises ahead when he also learns that Jackson, Janna and even ***PAGE*** 5. the doctor who attended him are members of the SHADO organisation and that every clue he has been following up has been deliberately planted to trap him into becoming the subject of a test before being invited to become a member of the organisation himself. ---------- ***PAGE*** 6. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_SURVIVAL_" "Seek and destroy" is the grim order given when an alien craft lands on the moon - but there is a surprising development. * * * Colonel Paul Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) gives the instruc- tion "Find and destroy" after the death of an astronaut on the moon through the firing of a missile into the SHADO Moonbase leisure sphere. Chemical analysis of the projectile reveals that one of the constituents is unknown on Earth, and both Foster and Commander Straker (ED BISHOP) realise that a UFO must have landed on the moon during a recent meteorite storm that played havoc with the base's detection systems. Foster takes part in the search for the alien craft but meets with disaster when the UFO he has spotted is damaged by intercep- tors and crashes into his moonmobile. Back at base, he is presumed dead. But, miraculously, he has survived with nothing more serious than an injured ankle. Using his gun as a crutch, Foster tries to make his way back to base over the moon's inhospitable surface, but comes face to face with the Alien (GITO SANTANA) from the UFO, who has also es- caped death. In the struggle, Foster's gun is taken from him and he is at the Alien's mercy. To his surprise, the Alien doesn't try to kill him. Instead, he forces Foster to go on ahead in the direction of Moonbase..... until Foster's air supply runs out. His life is saved by the Alien who fits oxygen of his own to Foster's equipment, and as they journey laboriously on, Foster realises that the Alien is friendly. He does, in fact, come to respect the stranger from outer space, admiring his strength and appreciating his help. But the unusual friendship is doomed. Tragedy lies ahead..... ***PAGE*** 8. "U.F.O." "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_CONFLICT_" Flying debris in space presents a grim hazard to spacecraft - but even more so when an alien satellite uses it as a cover for attacks. * * * Ed Straker (ED BISHOP) is worried about the dangers of flying debris in outer space. Discarded rocket boosters, in particular, could be a hazard to orbital space flights and Straker also feels that they could be a cover for alien activity. But attempts to persuade the International Astrophysical Commission to clear the debris meet with fierce opposition from General Henderson (GRANT TAYLOR), of the Commission, even after the deaths of two SHADO spacemen in what Straker believes might have been a re-entry collision with an item of space junk. Henderson, however, thinks it was a pilot error and orders all orbital flights to be grounded pending an investigation. Space pilot Paul Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) is so con- vinced that the dead men were not at fault that he disobeys the order and flies the same route. He comes perilously close to meeting with the same fate but lands safely with proof that an alien satellite is using a burned-out rocket stage as cover. Henderson is still unshaken and accuses Straker and Foster of rigging the evidence, but Straker now has enough data to realise that the satellite is a decoy - a red herring to put SHADO off the real danger. The alien satellite has a bigger ob- jective than spacecraft - SHADO HQ itself. The danger looms closer, but Moonbase has been ordered to close down. And General Henderson, in the SHADO headquarters with Straker, realises at last that Straker's fears were justi- fied. Something must be done to clear the debris..... if they survive the attack of the UFO that is homing-in on them....... ***PAGE*** 10. "U.F.O." ED BISHOP as CMDR. STRAKER GEORGE SEWELL as COL. Their son John (BARNABY SHAW) brings them together briefly once a month when John spends a day with his father. When taking him home, Straker meets his divorced wife Mary (SUZANNE NEVE), although she has now re- married. It's a moment to which he looks forward, for his feelings towards her have never changed. But he has never been able to tell her the truth behind his apparent neglect. This time... tragedy. Young John runs into the road and is knocked down by a car. His condition is soon critical be- cause of an allergy to antibiotics. But there is one drug which could save him, and it would have to be collected in America. Straker promptly orders a SHADO air transporter to collect the drug. Simultaneously, Col. Freeman (GEORGE SEWELL) is puzzled by the actions of two UFO's which have been sighted. One suddenly veers off; the other hurtles towards Earth at a speed which soon makes it clear that it will have to crash. Crash it does, in Ireland, but no-one sees the alien pilot (RICHARD AYLEN) eject safely and make his way towards a lonely cottage occupied by a blind old lady named Mrs. O'Connor (MARY MERRALL). Through her, the alien tries to make contact with SHADO, and Straker and Free- man realise that he must be a defector from his own planet. The second UFO is again sighted and appears to be homing-in on the deserter. Meanwhile, Freeman has realised that there is just one hope of SHADO getting there first, and that is to divert ***PAGE*** 12. the transporter which is on its way from America carrying, though he doesn't know this, the life-saving drugs for Straker's son. So it's not surprising that he should have a lulu of a hangover the next morning, and the situation is made worse by the fact that he has to report to the SHADO Research Centre for a check-over. The centre is, in fact, a lovely old country house and is a cover for the SHADO Health Farm where top personnel are kept in trim. Foster's night out of over-indulgence has not left him in the best of shape: strict physical routines are ordered. He goes into the sauna bath and passes into a semi- conscious state in which he is only vaguely aware that start- ling things are happening. Unknown to him, a UFO has penetrated the SHADO defences to land in the area of the Centre - and Foster finds himself abducted by an alien. Although Commander Straker (ED BISHOP) pinpoints the UFO's position, he is too late to save Foster. Orders go out to destroy the alien craft, but Sky One pilot Gordon Maxwell (JEREMY WILKIN), realising that Foster is aboard, deliberately refrains from shooting it down. But the craft is damaged, crashes on the lunar surface, and Paul Foster is rescued. Further danger lies ahead for Foster, however: he is wearing an alien space helmet. Clumsy removal would mean instant death because of the breathing liquid inside the helmet. Foster finds himself fighting for his life..... only to find, as he struggles for consciousness, that he is still in the sauna bath.... ---------- ***PAGE*** 17. "U.F.O." ED BISHOP as COMDR. He seems to know, in advance, exactly what they are going to say. Even more mystifying, and worrying, is the receipt a couple of weeks later of a film script in which Croxley reveals every detail of the SHADO organisation and its personnel. They discover, when tracing the psychiatrist he has been visiting, that Croxley has powers of extra sensory perception which are so pronounced that he can feel the future. When Croxley asks Straker and Freeman to meet him at the ruins of his house, they face a demented man, intent on killing them. And they are defenceless. He can anticipate their every thought and movement. But his tortured mind reveals the truth... a mind that has been taken over by aliens from outer space who are using him as their agent to destroy SHADO. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_CLOSE UP_" There are two ways of looking through a telescope, as Com- mander Straker comes to realise when launching a new space probe project which will follow a UFO to its origin. * * * Hopes of reversing the UFO advantage of spying on Earth are raised with the perfection of an electron telescope, known as B.142, with magnification enabling close-up pictures to be taken over vast distances. Put into a space probe orbit, it could track any UFO coming into the orbit and follow it back to its planet of origin and send high definition pictures back to Earth. This could be the first step towards taking the fight back to the alien planets responsible for threats to Earth. Commander Straker (ED BISHOP) receives the required allocation, but one man who displays resentment is Kelly (NEIL HALLETT), a mem- ber of the SHADO scientific staff. He wants money for a project of his own, but there's no chance of that with the new allocation going to the other plan. Everything progresses well. The new space probe is put into orbit and when a UFO appears interceptors force it into the orbit. As it heads for home, the B.142 begins to track it. It is expected that it will take anything from four months up- wards before pictures are radiated back to Earth from the planet millions of miles away, but to Straker's surprise they come through far more rapidly. But Kelly reports that there is a fault in the device: the range and magnification of each shot have not been trans- mitted. Straker insists that some details could be identified, and when Kelly projects his pictures they reveal some fascinating shots which appear to display such items as a building, an agricultural area, rock formation and vegetation. Straker is impressed - but impressed in an entirely different way when Kelly tells him the truth. He has been looking at greatly magnified pictures of a bee's eye and a girl's leg. Kelly has made his point. While others have been busily look- ing into outer space, Kelly has been developing his own project of looking into inner space, an almost completely unexplored area, which, he believes, could well provide the answers to some of the basic questions about the universe and even life itself. Still unable to believe that Foster would be capable of committing such a crime, Straker makes further investigations and with Col. Freeman (GEORGE SEWELL), visits Foster's apartment. They are intrigued by an indoor garden - and find a bugging device in it. About a mile away from the apartment, a tape recorder, with a built-in radio receiver, is discovered. To add to the mystery, a film director named Mason (NEIL McCALLUM) tackles Straker with an accusation that Paul Foster has been indulging in industrial espionage, giving away secrets con- cerning a film Mason is making. Straker is even more worried by damning evidence against Foster that a large sum of money has been paid into his bank, though Foster denies any knowledge of this. Thanks to finding the man who provided the radio receiver found near Foster's apartment, Straker is able to trace its owner and identify the real industrial saboteur who has unsuspectingly stepped into the world of Security. "U. F. The two men afterwards accuse him of putting them in even greater danger by ordering re-entry at an impossible angle. The two hitherto loyal members of SHADO begin to wager a campaign against Straker, alleging that he has become mentally obsessed with his command and demanding that he should be removed. Straker is deeply hurt. He has always regarded Paul Foster as a personal friend. The campaign takes on an even more serious aspect when Craig tries to murder him. He fails, but the campaign is continued even more ferociously by Paul Foster, who appears to be scheming to take over command himself. Matters reach a head in a life-or-death showdown between Foster and Straker - a battle which Straker wins, leaving Foster in a state which requires psychiatric treatment during which the strange truth is revealed. What happened to the two men when their module came so close to the UFO? It seems that they were subjected to a deep sub- liminal impulse which instilled in them the desire to kill Straker, thus weakening SHADO and paving the way for a major attack from outer space. Now the question remains: will it be possible to return Foster to normality? Only Straker has the answer......... ---------- ***PAGE*** 27. "U. F. 0." ED BISHOP as COMDR. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_SUB-SMASH_" Commander Straker discovers that the perils of the deep are even worse than the hazards from outer space - yet one danger is caused by the other. * * * A new menace appears from Outer Space - a UFO that can fly under water and remain there long enough to be a threat to shipping. Commander Straker (ED BISHOP) therefore orders a systematic search of the area in which a freighter has just been sunk, and he himself joins Skydiver to lead the search. Nina Barry (DOLORES MANTEZ) is one of the crew, too: switched from Moonbase Control to do similar work in Skydiver. As a surface search is being made, Nina picks up a sonar echo and judges it to be a fast-moving metallic object. Skydiver crash dives, but it is not long before Nina picks up echoes of an underwater craft ahead of them. Then it disappears from her screen. The alien craft has, in fact, moved into a cavern entrance. Sky- diver, reaching it, rocks violently as it is hit by external explo- sives, and is so badly damaged that it sinks to the bottom. Sky One is launched, with Waterman (GARY MYERS) piloting, and he sets in motion efforts to rescue the stricken submarine. But the situation is desperate: it seems impossible to reach Skydiver. Straker gives instructions for members of the crew to be evacuated through the escape hatch, but it jams and Nina, in the tube, is trapped. By the time she gets back, in a terribly injured state, Straker is close to death. In what both think must be their last moments, they come very close to each other, breaking through the barrier of reserve and differences in rank that have separated them through the years they have been together with SHADO. But salvation comes, just in time, when the rescuers hit on a new method of bringing Skydiver to the surface, and they find themselves in hospital with their lives again in front of them. Nina can't help wondering, though, if in that moment when they were so close to death she had said too much.......... ***PAGE*** 29. "U.F.O." ED BISHOP as COMDR. STRAKER GEORGE SEWELL as COL. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_THE DALOTEK AFFAIR_" Disaster threatens when the Moonbase radio and video link with Earth fails. But what has caused it? * * * The sudden failure of all the radio and video equipment on Moonbase is an alarming mystery. It means that video link with Earth has broken down and that detection of alien intruders is threatened. A check of the equipment reveals that nothing is wrong, and there is no unusual solar activity. Then the equipment returns to working order of its own accord. Colonel Paul Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) of Moonbase suspects that it might have been caused by the presence on the moon of a private business corporation's team which has been given permission to carry out a lunar survey, despite violent opposition from Com- mander Straker (ED BISHOP). The team consists of Jane Carson (TRACY REED), Tanner (CLINTON GREYN) and Mitchell (DAVID WESTON), who have just had a very narrow escape when a meteorite has crashed on the moon, leaving a deep crater. The team seem to be in the clear. The only possible cause of the trouble could come from its geological scanner. Plans are made to ensure that it is not working if any further emergency occurs while the surveyors are still there. Once again, the Moonbase radio equipment fails, this time when a moonship is coming in. Radio contact is lost, the moonship's equipment goes haywire, and the craft crashes. Yet, once again, the equipment check shows nothing wrong; but, as he has been unable to contact the survey team and confirm that the geological scanner was not working, Foster orders it to be re- moved and this means the end of the survey. But when the radio equipment fails for a third time, just as a UFO has been sighted, it's clear that the scanner could not have been responsible. This time, though, there is a solution to the mystery, thanks to Jane Carson and her colleagues reporting that they have seen some strange equipment at the bottom of the crater......... ---------- ***PAGE*** 31. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_FLIGHT PATH_" A man's devotion to his wife is used as a weapon to force him to turn traitor. But how can forces from another planet achieve this? * * * The link between Paul Roper (GEORGE COLE), of SHADO moon- base, and a SHADO H.Q. medical technician named Dawson (KEITH GRENVILLE) is remote, but it spells drama and tragedy for Roper from the day Dawson is the victim of a UFO attack. Roper is a worried man when he leaves the moon for a spell of leave, and he arrives home to find his wife Carol (SONIA FOX) in a terrified state after an intruder has entered her home. A telephone call to Roper later that night convinces him that the mystery man who has been threatening him is in earnest and that Carol is in danger unless he obeys the instructions he has received. The first indication Commander Straker (ED BISHOP) and Col. Freeman (GEORGE SEWELL) have that something is wrong with Roper is when he reports to H.Q. for normal de-briefing tests, and stress factors are discovered. Under close observation, he is heard tele- phoning a set of figures to a contact - but what they mean is a mystery, except that they suggest he is a traitor. Freeman suspects that Carol is being used to force his hand. It is not until later that the significance of the figures becomes clear. They represent a flight path for a major UFO attack. But Roper has got two of the figures wrong, either acciden- tally or deliberately. It means that the aliens have received false information which they would rapidly detect. And they'll be seek- ing a reckoning with Roper.... which they do, through his wife. Carol pays the penalty. But, as she is being attacked, she shoots her assailant. He is revealed as Dawson, the innocent traitor who, during that earlier UFO attack, was indoctrinated with an electronic probe inserted in his temple. It now appears that the big attack will coincide with sunspot activity which would make the UFO undetectable. But one man, on his own and stationed at a pre-determined position on the moon's surface, could change the whole pattern and wreck the planned attack. That one man is Roper. It's his chance to even the score....... ---------- ***PAGE*** 33. "U.F.O." ED BISHOP as COMDR. STRAKER GEORGE SEWELL as COL. FREEMAN PETER GORDENO as CAPT. CARLIN GABRIELLE DRAKE as LT. SID (the Space Intruder Detector) in orbit around the earth on the opposite side to the moon, has confirmed that a UFO is flying towards earth. Three interceptors are immediately launched, then SID's prediction, "UFO on collision course with interceptors," is tragically followed by one of the interceptors being destroyed and the UFO getting through outer defences. Gay Ellis (GABRIELLE DRAKE), of Moonbase Control, is sus- pected of having made a wrong judgment when issuing evasive instructions and is ordered to report to Commander Straker (EDWARD BISHOP) at SHADO headquarters, together with the two surviving interceptor pilots, Mark Bradley (HARRY BAIRD) and Lew Waterman (GARY MYERS). They are psychoanalysed and the reports fed into a computer, which comes up with the astonishing verdict that both Mark Bradley and Gay Ellis show abnormal emotional counts, and also that Gay is showing an ultra-excessive stress factor. The inference is that they're in love and that Gay's misjudgment was caused by worry over Mark's safety. Neither Mark nor Gay will believe it, and Col. Freeman (GEORGE SEWELL) tells them he can do nothing to help them unless they can disprove the computer's findings. Meanwhile, they are to be given separate postings. Freeman is assigned to lead the search for the UFO, which is reported to have landed in Northern Canada. Gay goes with him in command of Mobile Control...... and finds that she has to prove to herself, in dramatic circumstances, whether or not the computer's findings have any basis in fact. Jo is a very attractive girl; and she soon makes it clear that she finds him attractive as well. Though not too happy at noticing she has a tape recorder in her handbag, Ed does- n't think there is anything to worry about until later, when he learns that Jo has returned to his office alone for a few moments, ostensibly because she has left her handbag behind. When his secretary, Miss Ealand (NORMA RONALD), telephones the news agency and discovers that they have never even heard of Jo Fraser, Ed Straker decides to go in search of her, and hands over command of SHADO temporarily to Colonel Freeman (GEORGE SEWELL). He eventually finds Jo at a motel, but she tricks him and escapes. He gives chase, and her car crashes. Their mutual attraction deepens, and he feels sympathetic towards her when she admits that she falsely claimed to be an agency reporter; but it was the only way to get in and see him to obtain a freelance article. He invites her back to his apartment. It's been a long time since he has felt attracted to a girl...... Meanwhile, Alec Freeman is finding that the responsibility seat is a hot seat. It calls for split-second and difficult decisions, and his admiration for Ed Straker increases. When a suspected UFO is sighted, he makes a wrong decision; so he is even more worried when he has a serious decision to take over the dangerous movements of a mobile oil rig on the moon. While doing so, Jean spots a UF0 hidden in the trees. They try to get away but are captured and taken into the craft, where they are subjected to an examination by the aliens. Regan is barely conscious, vaguely aware of a blinding light and strange pulsations. Then the light takes the shape of a cat's eye, and the next thing Regan knows is that he is back again in his car. The cat is still with him, but there is no sign of the UFO - and Jean is missing. Regan returns to SHADO headquarters and tells Straker (ED BISHOP) what has happened, but fails to realise that the cat has slipped into SHADO with him. It is believed at first that the aliens have been after transplant organs: this is why they have taken Jean. But the cap- ture of an alien suggests that, in this case, the aliens may not be humanoid after a11. They are abducting humans and re-programm- ing their brains with their own thought patterns. The UFO that has taken Jean is still around, and after one failure to destroy it, Regan makes a second attempt, though real- ising that if he shoots it clown, it will mean death for his wife. If he doesn't, a terrifying future on a far-off planet could be her fate......... But Regan no longer seems to be in control of his own reactions, and matters reach a climax when, in a frenzy, he attacks Col. Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON), leaving him unconscious. Russ is a famous International Showjumping champion, thoroughly at home in the saddle and unworried by the sound of the 'plane. He is far more concerned when he sees a column of smoke rising near some trees, guessing that an intruder he has warned before is responsible. His suspicions are correct. He finds a drop-out named Culley (NIGEL GREGORY). Russ loses his temper and warns him that there will he real trouble if he trespasses again. Meanwhile, back at SHADO Control, Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) orders mobiles to the spot but reports to Straker (ED BISHOP) that the search from the air has revealed nothing. Russ and Anne Stone are, of course, completely unaware that anything unusual is taking place, though Anne is puzzled by the way her horse keeps breaking into nervous sweats. Russ is equally surprised the following morning when his horse refuses to take a fence. In attempting to force him to do so, Russ is thrown - but the only sign of him is his riding crop and hat. When their father (RICHARD VERNON) joins in the search, he is startled to come across the mutilated body of the mongrel which belonged to Culley. Has Russ had another encounter with Culley and come to blows? The implications are even more ominous when Culley's dead body is found The SHADO search for the missing UFO now includes a search for the missing Russ. Foster, who is in charge of the search, orders depth charges to be fired into a lake in which he believes the UFO may have fallen. The UFO breaks the surface. The SHADO mobiles fire, and the UFO fires back, finally falling back into the water, sinking quickly an exploding. Then a cigar-shaped cylinder comes to the surface. Taken back to SHADO H.Q., the cylinder undergoes tests which are fraught with tension. Will it explode before its secret can be re- vealed? Straker wants to know what the cruiser was doing in this particular area. It could not have been on routine duties. But he can get no co-operation from Sheringham or anyone else. Sarah Bosanquet is his only real hope and besides sending Paul Foster to try to extract the secret from her, he has her closely watched. Sarah appears to have one unusual pastime for a girl. She studies the stars and has a very expensive telescope in her apart- ment. This telescope seems to be the key to the mystery. The significance of this becomes clear when it is found that she is sending information to the aliens, under whose control she has fallen, but in a bemused state which makes her an innocent dupe. How grim the situation is can be judged when Admiral Sheringham has to admit that the cruiser's task is to dump into the sea containers of an experimental nerve gas which proved to be far too dangerous ever to be used. One or them, Nina (DOLORES MANTEZ), immedi- ately gives the internal emergency alarm. Before Conroy can be found he has shot his friend Dale, again believing him to be an intruding cowboy. When Straker and Foster catch up with him, he turns on them and Foster has no alternative but to shoot him. A little later, there is another dramatic development when Captain "Beaver" James (CHARLES TINGWELL) of SHADO runs amok in SHADO Headquarters, attacks one of the operatives and shoots a guard in the belief that they are aliens. During the search for him, he shoots another guard and then shoots at Straker, who is unable to prevent his entering Control and getting hold of Virginia Lake (WANDA VENTHAM). Using her as a hostage, Beaver calls for Straker, saying he has got the alien's leader. To the crazed Beaver, everyone he sees is an alien, and he believes that the aliens have taken over. Between them, Straker and Paul Foster succeed in tricking him and saving Virginia, but in doing so Beaver is fatally shot. Tragically, he too has touched the deadly moon rock which Conroy found - and now it is Straker's turn to come under its evil influence.......... ***PAGE*** 49. "U.F.O." ED BISHOP as CMDR. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_REFLECTIONS IN THE WATER_" Straker and Foster find themselves in a strange underwater double world in which they come face to face with their own apparent twins. * * * Two incidents take Ed Straker (ED BISHOP) and Paul Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) to a volcanic island in the Atlantic. One is when a freighter is sunk by a mysterious object in the shape of a flying fish. The other is when a film cameraman meets his death while photographing fish from that same area which have found their way to the English coast. At the same time, a report comes from one of the SHADO per- sonnel, named Anderson (JAMES COSMO), that a mass attack by UFO's is imminent. When Straker and Foster, following reports from a Skydiver captain, investigate they find an underwater cable which the fly- ing fish, now identified as a UFO, was using as a power source. Following this, they come to a huge dome, which they investigate but find impossible to enter. Clearing a section of it, they look in and to their amazement see Anderson inside. Yet when they return to SHADO headquarters, they find Ander- son already there. He denies any knowledge of the dome but, as a precaution, is put under detention while Straker and Foster go back again to investigate the mysterious dome more closely. A watch has been kept on it all the time by the Skydiver. This time, when they lean against it, they suddenly find themselves on the inside. Beginning their search, they go separate ways, but when they come face to face again Foster launches a sur- prise attack on Straker. Defending himself, Straker kills his op- ponent. Then, to his bewilderment, Foster himself appears and they realise that the body on the floor is an exact double. Investigating further, they make another astonishing dis- covery. As they go through a door, they find themselves in an iden- tical replica of SHADO headquarters, and doubles of all the staff appear. When they overhear instructions being given to Moonbase to allow the massed UFOs through without interception, the truth dawns on them. Aliens have hit on a plan to fool Moonbase into believing that instructions are coming from the real SHADO Control. There is little time to spare. The Skydiver crew have been told to blow up the dome if Straker and Foster have not returned in an hour. And the hour is almost up......... ***PAGE*** 51. "U.F.O." ED BISHOP as CMDR. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_THE LONG SLEEP_" A ten-year sleep has a nightmarish outcome when a girl returns to consciousness after being in a coma and in doing so re-opens a mystery that has remained unsolved for a decade. * * * The file on a ten-year-old case is re-opened for Commander Straker (ED BISHOP) when a girl named Catherine Ross (TESSA WYATT) regains consciousness after being in a coma for all that time. It is a case in which Straker is very personally and emotionally involved, for it was his car that knocked down the girl and plunged her into her long, long sleep. On record is the mystery of a UFO that landed in the early 1970's. At first Catherine is frightened of him when she sees Straker, but he gains her confidence sufficiently for her to recall meeting a hippie named Tim (CHRISTIAN ROBERTS). As she does so, she screams out in horror at remembering that he is dead. Straker manages to help her remember more - of running away from home, then joining up with Tim in Piccadilly Circus, later going into the country and spending a night at a deserted farm and seeing two alien astronauts planting a liquid container ......... of Tim grabbing a piece of mechanism close to it and throwing it to her, of running away, chased by the aliens...... and, a little later, of seeing Tim falling slowly, as if in slow motion, to his death from a rooftop. Catherine remembers, with difficulty what happened next ..... of being hit, losing consciousness, of seeing Tim's body when she came round and next realising that it had disappeared. Her last memory is of being knocked down by a car - Straker's car - in a lane near the farm while trying to get back to London. ***PAGE*** 53. So a dead case has come back to life with a vengeance. Somewhere in a derelict farmhouse is a bomb of some kind planted by aliens ten years ago. But where is the farm? Catherine can- not remember. But there is one man who could help - Tim. She knows he is dead, yet when she catches sight of the male nurse in charge of her she recognises the face. It's Tim! He's real. He has been brought back to life and he, too, wants to know something that Straker is equally anxious to find out. What happened to the piece of mechanism Catherine took with her? He gives her an injection which, he says, will bring back her memory and the next thing that happens is that Straker receives an urgent call to see her. She recollects now where she dropped the mechanism, but Tim has got there first. Where, though, is the farm? Straker has to give her another injection to recall that memory. He does so reluctantly, realising the danger and the terrible results that might, and do, come from it. Already, he is more than a little in love with her. Now it is a race against time to prevent the alien-con- trolled Tim exploding the deadly bomb. Straker and Paul Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) reach him, but there is even more macabre drama ahead........... ---------- ***PAGE*** 54. "U.F.O." ED BISHOP as CMDR. STRAKER MICHAEL BILLINGTON as COL. "U.F.O." _Episode_: "_TIMELASH_" Time stops still - and Commander Straker runs amok. A lot can happen in a fraction of a second! * * * An attack of madness seems to have struck Commander Ed Straker (ED BISHOP). Astonished members of SHADO Control reel as he savagely smashes equipment, knocks Paul Foster (MICHAEL BILLINGTON) across the control room, and then rushes crazily out of the building, hitting at anyone in his way. He is caught at last and when a dead body is found he is suspected of being a killer. But what has happened to him? The only clue comes from his secretary Miss Ealand (NORMA RONALD), who says that Straker had gone off to the airport that morning to pick up Virginia Lake (WANDA VENTHAM). But Virginia cannot remember what has happened, and it is a long time before Straker himself can piece together the mystery, which he does after being given a powerful truth drug. He is able to recall driving back with Virginia and seeing a green flying saucer which tries to destroy their car. They escape and arrive back at SHADO headquarters to face another shock. Above ground, in the film studios and on the studio lot, life seems to have come to a halt. Everyone and everything is in a state of suspended animation. Down below, in SHADO, everything is similarly motion- less. Straker tries to contact Moonbase, but nothing happens. And then he and Virginia realise that they themselves are slowing down. Desperately, they make for the medical centre and Straker is able to reach for an injection which speeds up brain, muscles and co-ordination and returns them to normal. They realise now that an alien power has succeeded in breaking the time barrier. ***PAGE*** 56. Then a voice rings out. It is a challenge to Straker, mocking him. And the owner of the voice reveals his identity. He is a radar operator named Turner (PATKICK ALLEN). Turner is the aliens' instrument in this latest to smash SHADO and he has been given the power to cheat time. And how can you catch a man who has time on his side? The chase is grimly eerie, and its outcome the explanation for Straker's extraordinary behaviour when time returns to normal without anyone realising that it has even stopped...... ---------- ***PAGE*** 57.
